Why are prosecutor's seeking the death penalty?

Prosecutors will often try to get the death penalty for serious crimes, such as double homicide and child , because they often end in a long prison sentences, such as 25 to life. It is very expensive to imprison someone for this long and so it is cheaper to have the death penalty.
